Two ideas:
One is a direct link from the forums to the chat room, like where the PM:FAQ:MEMBERS: .. etc are

also

a ring a ling noise that you can toggle on and off for the chat room, that rings when someone posts.. easier to browse around and then hop back when you know some1 types something.
