Legacy of the Force Set Review (Out of 5 Lightsabers)
ImageImageImageImageImage

If there ever was a set that changed the way the Star Wars Miniatures game is played, then Legacy of the Force is it. It is perhaps arguably the most competitive game changing set ever made. Not only does it break several boundaries and introduce some of the most diverse characters ever made, it continues the ground-breaking advent of Deadly Jedi. This set has some of the most controversial non-unique characters ever created (Bothan Noble, Elite Rebel Commando, Republic Commando Traning Sargeant and Corsec Officer to name just a few). Finally, we see a set that has representation from every single Faction. Even the Factions that only get 1 or a few pieces get a significant upgrade from what they had going into this set. Having said all that, forever present are the days of useless Unique characters – Moff Morlish Veed and Leia Organa Solo, Jedi Knight are somewhat of an example of this – although Leia does give the New Republic Battle Meditation. We see more ground breaking abilities in this set, Base Damage 30 for a Triple Attacker, Override on a Non-Unique character, Sever Force, Delta Shield/Fire Support, Self-Destruct 40, and probably the most game-changing ability seen, Greater Mobile Attack. That is just SOME of the new abilities (or new combinations) introduced in Legacy.

New sets don’t come out with controversy though. Although Legacy has pretty much defined the way the competitive Star Wars Miniatures has been played there are a load of questions regarding how all these pieces and new abilities will affect the “Fun Game”. As the bar continues to get raised, keeping the game interesting and playable at the “fun” level gets exceedingly difficult as the “Meta” bar gets raised. All that aside though, Legacy, as controversial as it may seem defines the way Star Wars Miniatures is played on many levels. It will be exceedingly difficult in future sets to live up to the expectation of this set, not only in the new abilities and combinations present, but also in the Faction representation, non-unique playable characters, new versions of great Uniques but also, in the sculpts themselves. Legacy of the Force is the full Star Wars Miniatures package and a great place to start your collection….

Legacy of the Force Breakdown by Faction / Top Pieces by Faction

Old Republic
The Old Republic gets its first help in this set since Champions of the Force, and from here they can only get better. Nomi Sunrider is a huge boost to the Faction. With Melee Attack, Double Attack and Mettle she can pack an offensive punch for her 41 points. Her stats are decent but rather low for her cost (100 HP, 19 Defense, +12 Attack). She does however, have some of the best Force Powers out there – Renewal, Battle Meditation, Block, Deflect and more importantly Sever Force which can stop a target adjacent character from spending Force points for the rest of the skirmish which can be huge (although it does replace turn). The Old Republic Scout and Recruit are some cheap additions to the Faction – the Recruit being a 5 point shooter to combine fire which meshes well with Battle Meditation. The Scout is also a nice addition with Stealth and Flanking Support giving the Faction a ton of synergy with Meditation.

Key Pieces:Nomi Sunrider (Very Rare); Old Republic Soldier (Common); Old Republic Scout (Common)

Sith
The Sith get a few significant Sith Lords in this set in an effort to rule the Galaxy. They follow the MO of the Sith which is medium to high cost, extremely deadly characters that can pack quite a punch but maybe lack in the defensive department. Darth Caedus is a curious piece in this set – his stats are average for his cost, not great but nothing to shy away at. He suffers from the typical low attack of some mid-costed Dark Side characters. However, he does have a slew of new interesting abilities. Virulent Poison Dart is almost a sure 40 Damage, Aing-Tii Flow walking allows him to activate twice and Rage/Assault give allow him to attack from 6 squares away for 40 or Rage when adjacent. Finally, Illusion is a nice alternative to Deflect/Block. If Caedus had MOTF2 he would be surely a beast. Darth Krayt is the devastating Sith Lord to add to the past Sith Lords we have seen (Bane, Exar, Revan). His stats are solid given his cost and he has Triple Attack to pack a punch combined with Deadly Attack and Vonduun Crab Armor 6 he is most certainly a great alternative to some of the other Sith Lords we have seen. Pilot is a curious ability obviously giving us some insight for something to come in the future as we have seen some Pilots in old sets (Wedge, Red Two) and in this set that can’t be affected by anything yet. Krayt does lack in the Force Power Department, but Lightning is beastly as is Sweep for Swarm control and his Commander Effect sadly DOES affect Bane, Nihilus and any Fringe characters as well making Darth Krayt a major force to be reckoned with. Darth Nihl is the 3rd “Darth” we see and he’s another solid and Unique Sith Lord with Melee, Double, Flurry and MR2 which is handy. He lacks Renewal like the other Sith Lords and doesn’t have the greatest Force Powers (Lightning 1 and Deflect) but he does have a potentially devastating CE – giving followers Flurry Attack which can be huge (especially with Bane or even Twin Attackers like Darth Talon). Talon is the last of the Sith Lords in this set with some interesting abilities. For her to be effective she has to be off on her own with Stealth, Mobile, Twin and Loner having her attack at +15 Attack – otherwise +11 just doesn’t cut it. She does have some solid Force Powers with Renewal, Lightning 1 and Bubble which can really cut down the damage incurred. Lumiya is the final Sith character in this set. She is a pretty sweet piece. She has a ton of HP for her cost and some decent stats. Pilot is again a curiosity and true to her character she is a Cyborg. Double Attack and MR3 is amazing for this character as is Stealth and Evade keeping her alive longer. Self-Destruct 40 is the final key and can be absolutely devastating and Regeneration 10 will keep her alive. Push is her only Force Power but it is a nice one. She does lack Renewal but for 53 points is a solid, deadly piece.

Key Pieces: Darth Krayt (Very Rare); Darth Talon (Very Rare); Lumiya, The Dark Lady (Rare)

Republic
The Republic gets only 1 character this set but it’s a great addition. The Republic Commando Training Sargeant will be key to any Republic Commando squad. This character does have to be played carefully thought because for 30 Points, he only has 30 HP and 15 Defense and lacks Stealth. +10 Attack and 20 Damage is decent but you’re better off only attacking if it’s a necessity as his key point is to support your Republic Commandos. Delta Fire Support and Shield Support are both Special Abilities so Disruptive has absolutely no effect. His Commander Effects are solid and help the simple Clone Trooper Grenadier as well as the ARC Trooper giving them Both Grenades 30. Throw a couple Clone Troopers in with your Republic Commandos to Combine Fire for an additional 10 Damage.

Key Pieces: Republic Commando Training Sargeant (Uncommon)

Separatists
Darth Tyranus finally gets an amazing incarnation. He follows everything in line of the standard “New Jedi” that we have been seeing since Force Unleashed. Legacy of the Dark Side has some great stats, 120 HP, 21 Defense and +15 Attack is solid for a character Under 49 points. Duelist gives him a whopping 25 Defense against adjacent Force Users. His Force Powers are devastating especially against Melee Characters. He has Renewal 1, Master of the Force 2, Block AND Riposte which is huge. Force Lightning 4 is the icing on the cake, meaning he can really dominate especially if you’ve won initiative. Tyranus is a huge addition to the Separatists making a great Melee Piece to go along with Aurra Sing, Jedi Hunter and he’s Rare to boot!

Key Pieces: Darth Tyranus. Legacy of the Dark Side (Rare)

Rebels
The Rebels get arguably the best competitive piece ever made for Star Wars Miniatures. The concept of either choosing to activate one or two Miniatures is so broken it’s almost sick and I’d be looking to see a lot of the General Dodonna at Gencon 2008. He can also be in a New Republic squad through affinity making this character a must have at 9 points in any Rebel Build. Deena Shan is a more expensive Juno Eclipse, and although she has Stealth and Disruptive she also costs 3 points more then Juno. She does have a lot of HP and great Defense for a Unique 12 Point character so she’s a solid addition to any Rebel Squad giving them – yes – triple Disruptive. Luke Skywalker, Legacy of the Light Side is the first character we see with the new ability, “Greater Mobile Attack” allowing a character to move before AND after Attacking, meaning he can move his speed and still make both attacks. Of course, Luke does best sitting still has his +9 Attack isn’t solid so Careful Shot makes him deadly especially coupled with Admiral Ackbar for +17 attack against activated enemies. Accurate Shot and Stealth make Luke really deadly for any Rebel build and Deflect and Jedi Mind Trick are great additions especially with Renewal making Luke a versatile, useful piece. The Rebels get a couple of the best Non-Unique characters that could have possibly been made thus far as well. The Rebel Honor Guard isn’t one of them but he is a 10 point Bodyguard with MR2 and Mighty Swing. The Twi’lek Scout at only 7 points hasn’t really found a place yet but Rangefinder is an interesting ability. This allows him to give Allies +4 who don’t move +4 Attack against nonadjacent enemies this round. This can be significant help for characters like Luke, Hero of Yavin who can get up to +12 Attack now (or +16 with Ackbar) and with Double/Twin making him a beast without having to take a bunch of combined Fire characters. The Elite Rebel Commando is an awesome piece. It is the first non-unique character with Override and this character does have a huge bag of tricks. Twin Attack is great for 16 points, as is Stealth, Grenades 10 and the Droid devastating Ion Gun +20. Against droids, this little beast can deal 60 damage in a round THEN lock a door shut or open to boot. Finally, the Bothan Noble is a slightly better (and cheaper) Princess Leia. He doesn’t give the +4 Attack and +10 Damage that Leia does, but what makes him better then her and his similar Imperial version (Imperial Officer) is that his Commander Effect affects all Followers – not only Rebels (like Leia) or Non-Uniques (like the Imperial Officer). The Bothan also has Heal which is nice and this guy is Non-Unique meaning you can have a few of these guys out there at once.

Key Pieces: Bothan Noble (Uncommon); General Dodonna (Rare); Elite Rebel Commando (Uncommon)

Empire
In Legacy, the Empire’s focus is in and around the Legacy era and thus, we see the first set with the Empire Faction not containing Darth Vader. The Empire is well covered in this set with a lot of synergy and some pretty solid pieces. The Imperial Pilot is a solid 8 Point Empire Addition to help with the AT-ST’s in combining Fire, or repairing them. All Mounted Weapons will get a bonus with these guys. The Shadow Stormtrooper is a beefed up stormie with Stealth and careful shot to sock you for 20 damage. The Imperial Security Officer is a solid 20 point addition keeping Super Stealth squads in check with It’s a Trap but also being able to dole out 30 damage at +12 attack and funny enough, this officer is subject to Commander Effects. Deadly Attack is also nice. We see our second Noghri – the Noghri Commando who is a beast with Melee/Double/Cunning Attack, Stealth AND Poison +10 to potentially deal 80 damage in a round for a manageable 23 points. Moff Nyna Calixte is one of the better Uniques in Legacy. For 18 points, she has Recon and Stealth giving the Empire more of a chance to win initiative but her CE’s are great. She gives all Characters in her squad “Super-Stealth” but also, her characters do +10 Damage against enemies with Stealth. The vagueness of her CE means it applies to all “Characters” and not just followers, making her Commander Effect very powerful. Moff Morlish Veed however, isn’t the greatest piece. If his CE was identical to Dodonna’s he’d be a beast. Unfortunately for his CE to kick in, he has to have Line of Sight and with no Stealth or anything, he’s a prime target to get gunned down my Accurate Shooters. Yes his CE can do well against non-Accurate squads in the right circumstances, but all in all he’s a bit of a bust. We see Three Fel characters in Legacy, Jagged Fel who is by far the best 10 point character giving Gregarious to all Pilot Followers and also has New Republic Affinity, Marasiah is arguably one of the best 22 point characters out there with melee/double attack and although she has lower-end stats she has a wealth of Force Powers including Renewal, Alter, Leap, Block and JMT. We now move into the Imperial Knights section of the Empire lead by Emperor Roan Fel. The Emperor is a beast with Triple/Melee/Opportunist. He also has It’s a Trap and Synergy and Cortosis Gauntlet 17 which can be one of the best SA’s out there for the simple fact it can completely level a character especially early in a skirmish. Obviously thus he has Lightsaber Block and his Commander Effect is great for Disintegration control giving adjacent followers Bodyguard. Going along with him is Antares Draco, who is fairly close to Fel but needs to rely on Synergy to boost his +10 Attack. He has Pilot giving him and Jagged Fel some Synergy as well and Cortosis Gauntlet 18. Draco has Push 2 as well and Block to go along with his 4 FP. The Imperial Knights have 2 versions and work well with Draco and Roan Fel. They also have lower attack needing to rely on Synergy again to hit and Double attack as well as Cortosis Gauntlet 19. With half the FP of Fel/Draco they also have Block.

Key Pieces: Moff Nyna Calixte (Rare), Emperor Roan Fel (Very Rare), Noghri Commando (Uncommon)

New Republic
The New Republic gets a lot of credibility in this set with many great additions. For non-uniques, the Corellian Security Officer (Corsec) controls Super-Stealth squads by giving Non-Unique Allies It’s a Trap and also Deceptive. The Officer himself has Opportunist, Stealth, Evade and It’s a Trap making him crafty to take down. The NR gets a couple of needed additions with the Galactic Alliance Scout who gives them pseudo-Door Control with Door Gimmick, and adds Spotter +20, Stealth and Flanking Support lowering the defense of an enemy within 6 squares when it combines fire against it. The Galactci Alliance Trooper can hurt characters with Damage Reduction with Penetration 10 and Double Attack – combined with CorSec Officer, it can deal 20 a shot with Deceptive. Where the NR really benefit is the Uniques. Luke Skywalker, Force Spirit is a MUCH better version that Obi-Wan Jedi Spirit. Speed 4 keeps him close to the squad at least making him more playable. Leia Organa Solo, Jedi Knight is a decent addition but her stats aren’t great for 40 points. With only +10 attack and 19 defense with 100 Hit Points she’s probably best used in Jacen Solo squads to take damage and watch protective kick in. Battle Meditation is a nice addition and deflect should help her keep alive longer against shooters. Mara Jade Skywalker isn’t as devastating as her A & E conjuration but she does have Melee/Double/Cunning along with Stealth and Mettle meaning if she’s attacking against an opponent who has not activated she can deal 60 Damage. She does have slightly better attack then the old version, but chances are she won’t get much more play then Mara Jade, Jedi even though she has Renewal, Deflect and Push 2. Wolf Sazen is a nice solid addition at 39 points. He suffers from low attack meaning Luke, Force Spirit’s Mettle should help. Double Attack and Melee Attack is nice but he only has 100 HP and 21 Defense – which for 39 points is really high D. Opportunist means he can deal 60 damage making him a bargain with Force Push 2 and Surprise Move to give him a chance to get in position to take advantage of Opportunist or Push 2. Shado Vao is the ninja-kicking Jedi that can pack a punch. Melee, Double and Greater Mobile Attack means this guy can move a staggering 10 squares and still attack twice. Again, he suffers from amazingly low amounts of Hit Points but 22 Defense is really high and +13 Attack is respectable. This guy is a Force battery. He has Renewal, Block, Deflect, Precision (he can use this on both attacks), Riposte AND MOTF2. Shado Vao can be a pain to kill and a severe threat from a long range. Kyle Katarn, Jedi Battlemaster finally lives up to his reputation as a “one-man wrecking crew”. For 54 points, 140 Hit Points, 20 Defense and +14 Attack is average but he has a slew of great Special Abilities. Triple Attack, Melee Attack, and Duelist will keep him alive longer against Jedi and Grenades 40 can devastate swarms and a bunch-up of characters. Disruptive is huge on this guy making him the highest point character to ever have this – and a beatstick as well meaning he totally controls B & B type builds. He doesn’t have the greatest Force Powers but, they are versatile – with Riposte, Assault, Lightning 1 and Force Grip 1. Finally, the last useful New Republic piece is Han Solo, Galactic Hero. Han is a wonderful piece. He has Double Attack, Accurate and Cunning – the last two the standard for all Hans but he also has Evade, Greater Mobile Attack and Never Tell Me the Odds and to top it off, Disruptive as well. He will need Evade and GMA as with only 90 HP and 19 defense, he can be relatively easy to take down – Luke, FS should help with Mettle.

Key Pieces: Han Solo, Galactic Hero (Rare); Kyle Katarn, Jedi Battlemaster (Very Rare), Shado Vao (Rare)

Fringe
We get a lot of non-uniques in the Fringe and a lot of great additions for RPG-ing type Camapaigns, but competitively speaking, not a lot of solid additions aside the Uniques. The Human Bodyguard is a bit better then the Twi’lek having 40 HP instead of 30 for only one more point and being a shooter. The Human Scout has a neat ability – Stable Footing which lets him ignore low objects/difficult terrain and he also has Flanking support but only 10 HP. The Scoundrel can pack a punch with Opportunist +20 but with only 10 HP and 13 Defense he’s virtually useless. The Duros Scoundrel is the same version but with 1 more defense point and has Cunning Attack +20 instead – a little more useful. We see a Sebulba type character with the Dug Fringer who has some neat abilities for 11 points – Wall Climber, Close-Quarters Fighting and Cunning Attack so he can dole at 20 damage at +13 attack against adjacent enemies. The Gotal Mercenary is the first non-unique to have Intuition, which can help him get in position and he jives well with Nym for Double Attack- Evade should keep this guy alive a bit longer. The Guard Droid is a great addition for Separatist Droid Builds, especially with Grievous, Supreme Commander who can give him +11 Attack and Double/Twin Attack potentially giving this guy a shot at 80 damage if he doesn’t move. The Kel Dor has been really popular with Stealth, awesome attack (+12) and more importantly Self-Destruct 40. These guys can either work for you or against you if bombed at the wrong time. The Rodian Blaster-For-Hire is noticeably missing any synergy either with Jabba or Black Sun and his attack overshadows his potential to deal 30 damage – not to mention again, only 10 Hit Points. The last Non-Unique is the Trandoshan Mercenary – another Nym helper and at 9 points, Double Claw Attack, Rend +10 and Regeneration 10 make this guy somewhat playable but again, +4 Attack and 20 Hit Points just don’t cut it. Jabba Crime Lord will help most of these characters with this Commander Effect. The Fringe add a lot of great Uniques. Jariah Syn is an example of that. Some what situational, he can slug a Unique Jedi for +18 Attack for 40 Damage. Razorbug is a nice ability as is Thud Bug, but being non-Vong both of those will get a save. Deliah Blue is another solid versatile piece. Bounty Hunter +4 with Cunning, Accurate and Mobile means she can move in and fire away against Unique Opponents for +15 doling out 30 Damage. When she’s not doing that, she can either combine fire with Mounted Weapon characters dealing out another 10 Damage OR repair them with Industrial Repair 30. Finally, the last addition is a focal point in Legacy – Cade Skywalker, Bounty Hunter. This guy is pure, plain nasty. For 61 points he can Double/Twin at +16 with Bounty Hunter for up to 80 Damage – each miss requiring a Splash 10 save, and each hit requiring adjacent enemies to save Splash as well. Force Push 30 can be swarm control in a way but Force Heal 40 nerfs any other version of Heal that cost the same Force Points but somehow isn’t as effective. Cade is a solid, deadly piece.

Key Pieces: Cade Skywalker, Bounty Hunter (Very Rare), Deliah Blue (Rare), Kel Dor Bounty Hunter (Uncommon)

Mandalorians
The Mandalorians only have 4 pieces but all four add a place in the faction. The Trooper is the cheapest shooter they have now and with Cunning Attack and Deadeye can dole out 30 damage at +12 attack. He can also benefit from Momentum (Mandalore) and Mobile (Mandalorian Commander) and finally Accurate Shot (Boba). Stealth should keep him alive longer. The Gunslinger is an awesome Mando piece. Double Attack, Deadly Attack, Cunning and Evade give this chick 2 shots at +13 for 20 a pop again, Accurate with Boba. Canderous is the first Unique Triple Attack sans-melee and also can dole out 30 damage. He suffers from only +10 attack, so the Fringe will have to help with cheap combine fire pieces. 120 HP makes up for only 17 defense and Regeneration 10 should also help. Finally, Boba Fett Mercenary Commander is a well rounding piece for the deadly Mandalorians. Flight, Double Attack, Cunning Attack and Accurate mimic Boba Fett Mercenary, but he also has Missiles 30 and Greater Mobile Attack allowing him to move 4, Double Attack with Cunning at +17 for 30 a pop and then finish his movement – Flight making him able to move over Low Objects and difficult terrain quite easily. Penetration 10 makes him all the more effective against credible Huge characters such as Luke’s Snowspeeder and his Commander Effect – giving Followers in 6 Accurate Shot which is huge.

Key Pieces: Boba Fett, Mercenary Commander (Very Rare), Canderous Ordo (Rare), Mandalorian Gunslinger (Uncommon)

Yuuzhan Vong

The Vong get a ton of credibility in this set and become all the more playable. Yes, see the reprint of the Yuuzhan Vong Warrior, but we also see the Elite Warrior – and although this beast doesn’t fall under the Subaltern’s CE (Yuuzhan Vong Warrior Elite anyone?!) he still can pack a punch with Twin and VCA11. The Shaper is a huge addition to the Vong tacking on +10 damage (doubled though with criticals) to Vong Allies in 6, but for this devastator to stay alive, Ooglith Master is almost a must. Finally, the most deadly of Vong Characters to date is the Jedi Hunter. Melee, Twin, Jedi Hunter mean this guy can slug Force Users for +13 at 20 a pop (30 with the Shaper), +17 at 30 a a pop with the Advance Agent, Officer (cunning) AND +21 at 40 a smash with Tsavong Lah (Momentum). Try killing this guy – VCA6 virtually means 140 Hit Points and for 20 points, swarms of these guys are near impossible to bring down giving the Vong a solid, synergistic and well rounded Faction

Key Pieces: Yuuzhan Vong Jedi Hunter (Uncommon), Yuuzhan Vong Shaper (Uncommon), Yuuzhan Vong Elite Warrior (Uncommon)
