Alliance & Empire Set Review {Out of 5 Lightsabers}
Image Image Image Image Image

Alliance & Empire marks the 30th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise. A huge marketing campaign was put forth and there are some significant alterations made to this set to mark this special anniversary. First of all, square bases make their short-lived debut and although some players found this a nuisance, it was nice to put square bases on the square map grid for a change for a cleaner look. Either way it didn’t change the game much, and aside from the red “30th Anniversary” cards, the set was virtually no different esthetically then the other previous sets. Game play wise, Alliance & Empire was significant. Every Faction represented in this set (All excluding OR, Sith and Mandalorians) get key representation from excellent pieces. Even if it is only one or a couple of pieces, every faction that got printed got something added that is of huge benefit to that Faction. Alliance & Empire also served to remind us that the Rebels, who had fallen behind were given a significant boost both through gritty and amazing Unique pieces with significant Commander Effects to some of the best non-unique characters in the game – they will be the only faction (to this point) with a 4-point shooter – and a good one at that. We also saw a few reprints in this set but also some homage was paid to some of the well known races such as the Jawas and Ewoks. Alliance & Empire is a significant addition to the line. Every set represented got some “instant Meta” and some significant boosts to their faction, either making them playable competitively or stocking an already “playable” faction. This 30th anniversary set did not disappoint and it stood to show us that Rebel Alliance and Empire are the core of the Star Wars Galaxy.

Alliance & Empire Faction Review

Republic
Like a few Factions in this set, the Republic only gets once piece but it’s a great one with a nice fitting addition to the Faction. Quinlan Vos, Infiltrator becomes only the second “Stealthy” Jedi for the Republic – the other being Shaak Ti but Quin is much better. He has Double Attack and finally some much needed Initiative Control with Recon. Impulsive Momentum is fathoms better than Savagery and Quin can run up with his Momentum and sweep for 30 damage pops. He is certainly a great Republic Addition

Key Pieces: Quinlan Vos, Infiltrator (Very Rare)

Separatists
Aurra Sing has always been one of the best point for point miniatures in the game. When a new Aurra Sing was made in this set it was hard to think it could ever live up to her almost broken expectations. In most eyes she doesn’t but she is key to the separatists success. Her biggest drawback is her lack of Accurate of course, but blaster barrage and Jedi Hunter with Twin means she can devastate adjacent Jedi or sloppy setups. She is a beast and can be extremely deadly but she does lack Force Points. Aurra still is integral to pretty much every Separatist build.

Key Pieces: Aurra Sing, Jedi Hunter (Very Rare)

Rebels
The Rebels have become playable with this set on the competitive level. We see a few reprints (Rebel Commando, Elite Hoth Trooper, Rebel Trooper and Rebel Pilot) but we also see an array of usable Uniques and Non-Uniques. The Mon Calamari Tech Specialist is the best 4-point shooter in the game and of huge benefit to the Rebels – scramble is also a nice little bonus when they hit. The Rebels finally get some Non-Unique Commander help in this set with the Rebel Commando Strike Leader (Super-Stealth for Rebel Commandos and Dressellians) the Rebel Leader who counts on Spotter +20 which can be huge and one of the best CE’s up to this point – the Ithorian Commander. The Twi’lek Rebel Agent with Stealth/Spotter can pay off and the Wookiee Freedom Fighter is one of the best Non-Unique pieces in the game with some deadly abilities. For Uniques this set brings a lot of potential. First off, through three Han’s the Rebels get some options – “Hantaun” is a nice versatile piece and situational and fun, Rogue brings the Rebels some much needed Thrawn Control as it combats Master Tactician and Han in Stormtrooper Armor is a deadly piece with a great CE. Luke also gets three incarnations – the Landspeeder (which counts as Luke/Obi-wan) and can be extremely deadly with Twin and deflect/alter, Luke Hero of Yavin who can be the biggest wildcard in the game with Double/Twin and Flurry/Deadly (but low base attack) and finally Champion of the Force – probably the best Luke up to this point. C-3P0 and R2-D2 are combined as one in this set and combat disruptive while bringing override and Draw Fire. Biggs Darklighter although a glass cannon can pack a big punch with Evade when combined with Wedge from Universe and Chewbacca, Enraged Wookiee who although can be nasty suffers from +10 attack which usually means a miss (unless you are combining fire). Princess Leia has one of the best Rebel CE’s in the game with allowing a follower in 6 to make an immediate attack (one with Twin can make two) And Obi-wan Jedi Spirit is a neat piece giving Renewal to a character without it.

Key Pieces: Princess Leia (rare), Han Solo in Stormtrooper Armor (Rare), Ithorian Commander (Uncommon)

Empire
The Empire doesn’t get a lot of new pieces in this set when all is said and done but they get some interesting ones. The reprints include the Imperial Officer, Scout Trooper, Snowtrooper, Stormtrooper, Stormtrooper Officer and Heavy Stormtrooper. The Repulsor Sled is a nice non-unique addition and Net Gun can come in handy sometimes especially with the movement this piece has (Speed 12). The Storm Commando is the foundation of a great 100 point build – Swiss Army Knife (thejumpingflea) and is a deadly piece especially if it’s shooting first with Cunning, Deadeye and Double Attack. The Death Star gets some help with a Gunner and Trooper both are grunt troopers that don’t match up to the Stormtrooper but Splash is a nice effect as is Gunner. Admiral Piett gives all troopers a nice bonus with giving the Opportunist – a nice addition to work into swarm squads that will become deadlier after Force Unleashed. We also see a fitting Commander laced Vader giving Stormies 22 defense by adding +6 Defense while in cover and being a beat stick himself with riposte, deflect and double attack for his meager 50 points. Imperial Governor Tarkin continues the trend of a Commander Effect laced Empire by giving Commanders Extra Attack and Doctrine of Fear in the right situations can be game breaking.

Key Pieces: Admiral Piett (Rare), Darth Vader, Imperial Commander (Very Rare), Storm Commando (Rare)

New Republic
With only one piece the New Republic gets one of the biggest boosts in the set. Mara Jade, Jedi is one of the deadliest pieces to date for her cost and can level entire beat sticks in one attack. Not only can she shoot (with Twin) as well as has Stealth, but +12 attack and 20 defense with 120 Hit Points keep her alive for a while. Run her up and Lightsaber Assault combined with Lightsaber (+10 Damage against adjacent enemies) and Cunning Attack giver her the potential of assaulting for 120 damage. She also has Deadly attack doubling her chance of pulling off a critical. Mara is a huge boost to the New Republic and she’s rare to boot!

Key Pieces: Mara Jade, Jedi (Rare)

Fringe
The Fringe comprises most of the rest of this set and we get some neat Fringe pieces that are actually quite useful in this set. The Chadra Fan Pickpocket, although having Gregarious is a “worse” Aqualish Assassin but still is quite deadly. The Duros Explorer with Spotter +10 and Evade is a nice piece to Combine fire with and we see a couple more Ewoks in this set – the Hang Glider and the Warrior who actually make Ewok swarms playable. Speaking of Ewoks, Wicket for 8 points is a nice addition to any squad and with “Traps” he can decrease the defense of an enemy in 6 making them more hittable. Lando, Dashing Scoundrel was voted as the best point for point Fringe Miniature up to Legacy by the fans of this site and he is key in most competitive builds for what he can do. A few reprints (Tusken Raider, Nikto Soldier and Gamorrean Guard) don’t spoil it and we see a new Jabba that is considerably more playable giving followers in 6 Cunning Attack. Ephant Mon remains to be seen on a competitive level but something tells me he may just be with an interesting Commander Effect that can be boomed across the board with Mas making the Hans and Bobas of the world a target. The Human Force Adept is a cheap quick kill to set off Unleash the Force by Jacen Solo and can also pack a punch when combined with the Ithorian (as can many Fringers) and we see some Jawas to help level those Droid armies. The Trader is especially useful with Cunning Attack. The Rampaging Wampa is everything we hoped and dreamed for of the original one, and with Exar this beast can “Ambush” attacking at +19 for 80, 100 with Rend. The Rodian Scoundrel although with low attack twins with opportunist and the snivvian is a nice cheap bounty hunter. The Trandoshan Mercenary is another double attacker for Nym and the Talz, although interesting, is pretty situational. Finally we see a fairly inexpensive Boba Fett that can Accurate and also adds Missiles 30 for a great 38 point support piece.

Key Pieces: Lando Calrissian, Dashing Scoundrel (Rare), Wicket (Rare), Boba Fett, Enforcer (Rare)

Yuuzhan Vong
The Yuuzhan Vong finally get some considerable help in this set and it starts with the Advance Agent, Officer who gives all Vong Allies cunning (this includes the other commanders) so now Lah can triple at +20 for 20 a pop which is massive. The Advance Scout is a considerably cheaper deadlier bomb for Nom to work with and Yomin is an awesome Vong addition with Spit Poison +20 and Poison +10 for all Vong Followers which is nice giving you the option to Spit (no reroll) or a straight up attack tacking on Poison

Key Pieces: Advance Agent, Officer (Uncommon), Advance Scout (Common), Yomin Carr (Rare)
