Bounty Hunters Set Review {Out of 5 Lightsabers}

ImageImageImageImageImage

If Champions of the Force brought the Force back, Bounty Hunters reminded us that there are trained assassins designed to take it away. In Bounty Hunters we see another huge set (our second to this point) and the least amount of Force Powers and Commander Effects since Rebel Storm. BH is a significant set for a number of reasons. The number of Special Abilities found in this set is groundbreaking. Also, we see the inclusion of one of the most game-changing abilities mostly because it’s found on a piece worth using. The Republic and Seperatists just get huge help (so little help at all) but virtually every other Faction gets something worth noting. We see some significant Fringe Non-Uniques that become staples in many different types of builds as well as some key Unique pieces that are the backbone of many competitive builds. Although some Factions are only represented by one Miniature (Empire, New Republic) they both get game-breaking characters that change the Meta of the game. Bounty Hunters also is the third straight set bringing in a new Faction – this time we see the ever deadly Mandalorians as they try to wreak havoc on the galaxy. Bounty Hunters is a significant addition to the Star Wars Miniatures line, mostly because of the large portion of the set being Fringe characters that can be used by any faction. Aside from that, the other “core” factions get a little help but in short, the Bounty Hunters are out to collect every Bounty available.

Bounty Hunters Faction Review

Republic
The Bounty Hunters set isn’t all that of a helpful set for the Republic. The ISP Speeder is the only addition and although it is 42 points it does have the capacity to make 4 attacks in one turn on a single target dishing out an unthinkable 80 damage. At the same time the low attack and the fact that it’s a Rigid Huge makes it pretty much tough to play or take competitively – still a fun piece the ISP works well with the Aerial Clone Trooper Captain and of course in Imperial builds through Order 66

Key Pieces: ISP Speeder (Rare)

Seperatists
The Seperatists are in the same boat as the Republic. They get 4 new pieces but all four are huges which are a detriment. At the same time, if you’re army building or reliving the tense moments on Geonosis or during the Clone Wars these pieces are instrumental so it’s great having them in the set. Aside from really long names (Commerce Guild Homing Spider Droid, Corporate Alliance Tank Droid, Huge Crab Droid and Droid Starfighter in Walking Mode) the first three are okay. The Spider has Accurate and Speed 8 which is nice, the Tank Droid Double with Base 30 Damage and the Huge Crab gets an advantage not being Rigid and having Base 30 PLUS Momentum so it is smoking at +13 for 40. The only really playable piece tends to be the Starfighter Droid as it has Double/Twin like the ISP Speeder, Missiles 40 and DR 10 which is nice. Combine this beast with Darth Sidious and you can Dark Master it for a free double/twin and then have it activate on it’s turn for another double/twin which can me devastating. But like most droids, all four of these pack a punch with a pathetic amount of defense to be playable.

Key Pieces: Droid Starfighter in Walking Mode (Rare); Huge Crab Droid (Uncommon)

Rebels
The Rebels get a lot of pieces but only a small shot in the arm in this set. The Rebel Captain, Rebel Heavy Trooper and Rebel Snowspeeder are all great additions but at the same time, aren’t necessarily all that playable unfortunately. The Snowspeeder probably being the most used of the three. The Rebel Heavy Trooper gives the Rebels a 30 damage shooter to finally compare with the Heavy Stormtrooper all the way from Rebel Storm. The Rebels get 4 uniques in this set and the only one getting a lot of play when the set was released was Princess Leia, Hoth Commander. With Advantageous she gets a lot of credibility dealing 30 damage. Of course, that’s just a bonus – you’re taking her for her Commander Effect which allows Non-Uniques to return with a save of 16. That can be game breaking if the save is made. Aside from her, we see Chewbacca with C-3P0 which is a nice addition to the family of Chewies as he adds Double Attack for the first time. Also, with C-3P0 we see Draw Fire which can really come in handy especially against Accurate Shooters. Cleave and Momentum round him out making him deadly with fair stats. Han Solo, Scoundrel is the Han version in this set and upon set release it was thought he was “overcosted” for what he brought. Just Twin attack with Cunning at +13 for 60 total which is okay. We will see him shoot out of the stratosphere into Meta upon the release of A & E which when coupled with Princess Leia’s Commander Effect from that set we will see Han dishing out potentially 130 damage if all 4 attacks hit on a Cunning. Evade is also a nice addition. Finally, the last piece the Rebels get is the by far the worst incarnation of Luke Skywalker yet. He is one point more than Luke, JK but has 30 less HP, and 1 less Att/Def. Sure he’s a shooter with Sweep and Barrage but with only 60 HP he’s going to get cooked quick. It’s too bad to see Luke so poorly re-done as Young Jedi at a mere 21 points gave us hopes that this Luke was going to be deadly.

Key Pieces: Han Solo, Scoundrel (Very Rare); Princess Leia, Hoth Commander (Rare); Chewbacca with C-3P0 (Very Rare)

Empire
You may only think with one Miniature that the Empire got the short end of the stick in this set. You couldn’t be more wrong. Lord Vader struck fear into the galaxy of Star Wars Miniatures upon his release and he showed that he IS the Meta especially coupled with Thrawn. Lord Vader is so deadly it’s hard to imagine that at the time 71 points seemed almost cheap. Aside from Dark Armor and a noticeable lack of Double Attack you might think that Vader isn’t all that great when looking at his Special Abilities but seeing Twin Attack you get to thinking. Then you see his Force Powers – Renewal, Leap, Assault, Sweep, MotF2, Sith Rage and Overwhelming Force make him jaw dropping. So in theory when based with 4 enemies he could rage and sweep attacking each enemy twice for 30 a pop dealing an unheard of (at the time) 240 damage! Lord Vader was the gatekeeper at Gencon being part of the winning AND runner up squad (dubbed “B & B”). His Commander Effect is nothing to shrug at either – Advantageous has those pesky stormies shooting for 20 damage.

Key Pieces
: Lord Vader (Very Rare)

New Republic

Another Faction getting only one miniature you may think that the NR gets hardly any help. To the contrary, the New Republic, like the Empire, gets a key piece to help their Faction. Talon Karrde is one of the most versatile pieces in the game. He is an awesome support piece for the New Republic adding Recon –AND- Disruptive which is huge. Twin Attack almost means that the scrub he’s trying to pick off is more than likely going to end up smoked and you can’t forget about Fringe Reserves 20 – adding 20 points of Fringe Characters when you roll an 11 for initiative. This is handy as you can add on Lando, Dashing Scoundrel; a Bith Black Sun Vigo, or a combination of an ever growing amount of Fringers. Talon is a given in many 150 and 200 New Republic squads for all the versatility he brings

Key Pieces: Talon Karrde (Very Rare)

Fringe
The Fringe gets by far the largest amount of Miniatures in this set and we see everything thing from not so great (Young Krayt Dragon) to Amazing (Jango Fett, Bounty Hunter); From a Crutch (Boba Fett, Bounty Hunter) to confused (Nikto on Desert Skiff). This set has it all from the Fringe. Reprints of Dengar, 4-LOM, IG-88 and Bossk (all from Rebel Storm) do justice and are twice as deadly. All four of the recantations are amazing and deadlier then ever. We see new Bounty Hunters from average (Djas Puhr, Ayy Vida and Dannik Jerriko) to a great squad addition (Zuckuss). Tamtel Skreej is the Lando of the set and he can be extremely deadly if he can pull of his double opportunist with Cleave. Garindan’s Spotter 30 is deadlier then ever and of course Komari Vosa is broken until “Melee Attack” was omitted on the card – then she become not good enough. Nym adds Recon/Disruptive and a staggering Grenades 40 but his weak commander effect, as well as weak stats (100 HP/17 Def/+9 attack) make him fried pretty quick unfortunately. Oh and we haven’t even got the Non-Uniques! They are also well represented in this set but the highlights are the BBSV (Bith Black Sun Vigo) and AA (Aqualish Assassin) which become key Black Sun additions. The E522 Assassin Droid can be extremely deadly with Programmed Target and the Dark Hellion Marauder on Swoop Bike becomes an automatic in Exar Swap Squads. Boussh, BoShek and Bib Fortuna round out the Uniques and the Weequay Leader also becomes a key Non-Unique to use with other Non-Uniques for a deadly Mighty Swing. The Fringe really becomes diverse in this set and we see some of the deadliest Bounty Hunters that make the set name well chosen and worthy.

Key Pieces: Boba Fett, Bounty Hunter (Very Rare); Jango Fett, Bounty Hunter (Very Rare); Aqualish Assassin (Common)

Mandalorians
The last Faction represented in Bounty Hunters also happens to be a new one. The “Mandos” live true to their representations in the books and KOTOR video game series as extremely deadly combatants. Mandalore is a piece of work with base 30 damage, Deadly Attack and Momentum as well as Evade. He also give Mando Allies Momentum which will apply to the Mando Commander and the Basilisk War Droid which can get from one end of the map to the other in light speed, using Momentum all the way. The Mandos can really have huge damage outputs and the ranged Supercommando also does 30 Damage at +10 which is pretty good odds of hitting. With Mobile Attack provided by the Commander this guy can jump in and out of hidden areas to pop for 30 a shot. The Soldier in the right area can double attack with deadeye for a total of 40 damage and the Blademaster with Parry is a great piece to tie up Melee Attackers with – he’ll never give up an AOO that’s for sure. Finally the Warrior is a beast as well with MR2, Cleave and Momentum from Mandalore this guy can really chop up enemies quick.

Key Pieces: Mandalore the Indomitable (Very Rare); Mandalorian Commander (Uncommon); Mandalorian Supercommando (Uncommon)
