Champions of the Force Set Review (out of 5 LS)
Image Image Image Image Image

Champions of the Force puts the “Force” back in Star Wars Miniatures. With the advent of the most Force Powers we have seen in any set thus far, 36 total which is nearly double of any previous set. We also for the second straight set see two brand new factions – the Sith and Old Republic. Although competitively speaking both aren’t extremely competitive in nature, the Sith has some more pieces to draw from and instant Meta with two of the top point cost pieces in the game (to this point). The rest of the set is significant and vast improvements to most factions but most specifically the Republic and Empire with a total game-breaker in Mas Amedda. The Fringe also “brings the walls down” in terms of competitive game play and strategy with the most important piece (arguably) to this point – the Uganaught Demolistionist – who will change the power of Door Control forever in SWM. Although we see a lot of lightsabers, in terms of additions to the Seperatist, Rebels and New Republic we really don’t see significant and vast improvements but some added “help”. The focus on the Old Republic and Sith is drawn from the “Knights of the Old Republic” video game and we see some nostalgic pieces from the beginning of the Star Wars era. Champions of the Force sets the Meta for several sets regardless of what we see. Booming Voice changes the way the game is played as does the 3 point Uganuaght. Going forward, Star Wars Miniatures will never be the same after this set.

Champions of the Force Faction Breakdown by Faction / Top Pieces by Faction

Old Republic
The Old Republic is introduced in this set, and although they get a handful of pieces it is of extreme difficulty to work them into some competitive squads. Bastila Shan is the only Unique piece we see (for a while) and although she has triple attack and some neat Force Powers (Battle Meditation, Force Valor) she is difficult to keep alive against some of her Sith counterparts. We also see a “trooper” (not a bad one) with some good synergy to their Commanders (They gain Double Attack) but again, their point cost is relatively high. The three non-unique Jedi in this set are all beneficial. The Jedi Guardian is a double attacking Jedi with decent survivability – for a Jedi with Sweep to control swarms. The Consular brings a single attacking Jedi with Force Alter (which is nice) and Force Stun can come in handy. The Jedi Sentinel is your “Stealth” Jedi with the brand new “Satchel Charge” (Door Control). Although the Old Republic is new in this set, they get some decent pieces but nothing worth playing competitively

Key Pieces: Bastila Shan (Very Rare), Jedi Consular (Uncommon), Jedi Guardian (Uncommon), Jedi Sentinal (Uncommon)

Sith
The Sith show in this set why at one time they ruled the Galaxy. They are an extremely powerful faction with some of the highest point cost pieces in the game. They also get some decent Faction support and although they are worth a lot, they are still somewhat effective. Non-Unique wise the faction doesn’t get a lot of help as the Dark Jedi, Dark Side Enforcer, Sith Troopers and Commander and Dark Jedi Master are all relatively decent but they are not game-breaking. The Massassi Sith Mutant has great synergy with Exar, but that’s about it. The Sith Assault Droid though is intriguing as it can do auto-damage (flamethrower) and has double attack with Shields 2 potentially staying alive for a very, very long time against base 20 damage characters. The Sith though cannot be mentioned without looking at the Unique pieces represented in this set. Darth Malak and Darth Nihilus are both represented from the KOTOR Video Game series but both seem overvalued and ineffective competitively speaking, Nihilus being a total situational and “finesse” piece. Ulic is pretty powerful for what he’s worth and the hint at his Commander Effect (Mandalorian allies gain Bodyguard) we see that another Faction will be introduced probably in the next set. This Faction though is remiss with mentioning the 82 Point Darth Bane and 84 Point Exar Kun. Both are powerhouses in any build. Exar has been “toned” down a bit with all the Ysalmiri and Force Immunity out there, but he still can be a menace to deal with especially when combined with Dominate. Bane is a monster. Whether it’s 100, 150 or 200 Sith Sorcery can be huge as can his 50 Damage double attack against Jedi. The Sith Faction has some amazing pieces, and although they are worth a lot this Faction becomes fairly competitive in it’s introductory release.

Key Pieces: Darth Bane (Very Rare), Exar Kun (Very Rare), Sith Assault Droid (Uncommon)

Republic
Champions of the Force goes a long way to making the Republic a Meta-Faction. There are nineteen Republic pieces – the most in a set for them since Revenge of the Sith but this set brings some of the most powerful Republic pieces made. First off we see the Clone Commanders Bacara, Gree and Cody with good synergy to some Clones from the respective planets they battled on in Episode III and some great synergy with the Clones altogether. Bacara makes the Elite Clone Trooper from Universe immediately playable, and Gree allows Wookiees to join the Republic ranks regardless of their faction. The Republic Commandos also debut in this set and surprisingly as non-uniques making Boss, Fixer, Scorch and more importantly Sev immediately playable and deadly. They will get more help later on. We also see some key Jedi reprints that are aggressively priced in General Windu, Qui-Gon Jinn, Jedi Master as well as the brand new Depa Billaba and Even Piell. Barriss Offee also has fittingly great synergy with her master, Luminara Unduli and Queen Amidala is a fun piece to play giving Rapport and Mobile Attack to Republic Non-Unique Followers. Although a “mistake”, the Jedi Weapon Master at 26 points being Non-Unique is groundbreaking. Part of the 2007 Gencon Championship squad run by Dr_Divot, this piece is still powerful in Competitive play and extremely deadly for any Jedi or Sith to take on although that is starting to change. Perhaps the single most effective character made – Mas Amedda who’s Booming Voice allows CE’s limited to 6 squares travel across the board is printed in this set and is the core of any Empire (Affinity) and Republic squads that are heavy reliant upon Commander Effects. The Republic gets a significant boost in this set. Whether it is Jedi or Clones, Unique or Non-Unique the Republic becomes “meta-heavy” in Champions of the Force.

Key Pieces: Mas Amedda (Rare), Jedi Weapon Master (Uncommon), Republic Commando - Sev (Uncommon), Clone Commander Bacara (Rare)

Seperatist
Unlike the Republic, the Seperatist only get 4 characters. Three of them are okay but although the Octuptarra Droid has Triple Attack, it is priced to aggressively to be effective. 31 points for +7 attack it has just doesn’t cut it. The Crab Droid on the other hand, with only single attack is a nifty piece. A tank with 80 Hit Points, 18 Defense and +8 Attack is nice and the fact that it has Momentum is a bonus meaning this meat shield can slug away for 30 damage from 6 squares away. Darth Maul gets a new version – Champion of the Sith and he is extremely deadly. Only the second character to this point to have Quadruple Attack, Maul is a Force to be reckoned with. His only down side is his low attack - +13 and defense - +20. The low attack makes using Sith Rage a considerable risk but in future sets, we will see characters that will help compensate for his low attack. Darth Sidious also gets a new look – Dark Lord of the Sith and he seems a combination between his Clone Strike version and Rebel Storm’s Emperor Palpatine. Force Lightning is nice and deadly and Sweep is great swarm control. Competitively speaking though, this Faction really isn’t that notable – just some decent additions the nice thing is that Maul and Sidious are both “Rare” making getting them quite easy.

Key Pieces: Crab Droid (Uncommon), Darth Sidious, Dark Lord of the Sith (Rare), Darth Maul, Champion of the Sith (Rare)

Rebels
The Rebels even get less help then the Seperatists. Only 3 pieces are printed and the Hoth Trooper with Atgar Cannon is only useful when reliving the Battle of Hoth. Luke Skywalker, Young Jedi is a piece worth noting as he’s only 21 points and has Jedi Mind Trick – a nice ability to stun your opponent. Force Alter is also nice to avoid those crits. Yoda of Dagobah is a great Rebel addition as we see any Rebel Character able to get access to Force Points. Stun, Alter, MOTF3 and Renewal 2 are extremely deadly and Yoda can be included in some competitive squads for sure. The Rebels only get three pieces but one is great and one is decent enough for the point value (Luke) to look at playing.

Key Pieces: Yoda of Dagobah (Very Rare), Luke Skywalker, Young Jedi (Very Rare)

Empire
Although the Empire get more pieces then the Rebels and Seperatists, they really don’t get a lot. The Coruscant Guard isn’t worth noting and the Sandtrooper is okay but not great for the cost – Stormtroopers are still better options as you can take 3 of them for every 2 Sandtroopers helping you control the “activation game”. The Darktrooper Phase I isn’t great in this faction (no real droid support) but the phase 2 can get some play as it does have flight and a base 30 damage. Darth Vader, Champion of the Sith is the piece worth noting in this set. His Commander Effect, although risky, can pay off in a huge way with any Follower. He also can be a beast to take down with Block and Deflect and his HP and high Defense. The Snowtrooper Eweb is much better than the Hoth Trooper with Atgar Cannon and can find it’s way in many Thrawn Swaps or other Imperial Builds.

Key Pieces: Darth Vader, Champion of the Sith (Very Rare), Dark Trooper Phase II (Uncommon), Snowtrooper with E-Web Blaster (Rare)

New Republic
The New Republic only gets three pieces in this set, but in effect gets access to almost ten more. Corran Horn is an intriguing piece with some respectable sets, and given the errata on Melee Reach 2 – quite a bit more playable. Jaina and Jacen Solo are both significant additions to the faction. Jaina has affinity to bring any Han Solo character in and Jacen, any Princess Leia Miniature. So all of a sudden this faction can bring in Rebel Storm Han (Accurate Shot), or Han Solo, Rebel Hero for his Commander Effect. Princess Leia’s Senator CE can give this faction SOME semi-door control and later on there will be other versions that can significantly help this faction. Both Jaina and Jacen have good synergy together as well, and Jaina can be deadly attacking +14 for 30 a pop (Double) with Cunning Attack. Jacen is known for his “Unleash the Force” ability which can be game breaking, but with his low HP and Defense, easy to bring down and hard to pull off. Get him in a build with a wounded Leia in 6 squares however, and he’s swinging with Double Attack at +12 for a staggering 40 a pop.

Key Pieces: Jacen Solo (Very Rare), Jaina Solo (Very Rare)

Fringe
With only six Fringe pieces you would think they are pretty much all useless. The Arcona Smuggler is a decent 7 point shooter dealing 20 with Cunning. The R5 comes in handy with Repair 10, The Varactyl tames Savage characters – making them succumb to any Commander Effect and the Gundark is another Quad-Attacking character with high Attack. HK-47 is the only Unique, but he is worth a ton and his noticeable lack of Shields makes him easy to kill even being a Droid. The Ugnaught Demolitionist though is the best addition to this set changing the “Door Control” games up until this point and only being 3 points are probably the most used Miniature in the game, and the best point for point Miniature in SWM.

Key Pieces: Ugnaught Demolitionist (Common), Gundark (Uncommon), R5 Astromech Droid (Common)
