Preview Number Two

For this week, we bring to you a piece I am very excited about, but not for the reason of the abilities, or name, or of the game itself. This piece will have something very unique on its card, but nothing that affects the game, other than establishing the fact that it is not only us, the players, who care about the game.

While working on flavor texts for the cards, an idea occurred to me. I wondered about putting some Mando’a on cards to liven them up. I was looking up different phrases. One piece in particular, the following Mandalorian Gunsmith, was missing something. I had a great idea for a Mandalorian proverb, but was not sure how to translate it. This got me to thinking about the source of much of our Mando’a language, and the person responsible for it, Karen Traviss, author of many Star Wars era novels, many of them centered around the Republic Commandos. I had the crazy idea of contacting her, just to see if it might garner any results. This is an abbreviated version of what I sent to her:

Dear Karen Traviss,
My name is Ray Becker, and I am a big fan of your work in the Star Wars Universe, specifically the Republic Commando series. I write to you to ask a simple favor.
I don't know if you ever were exposed to the Star Wars Miniatures game which
was produced until recently. I have been a player and contributor to that community for many years, and now that the game has been discontinued, it has fallen on us to continue it.
Our first virtual set will release soon, with many new Mandalorian figures. . .Would you possibly be able to translate/invent a translation for the following phrase . . . I promise to give you full credit to as many people as possible. I believe this would win over some of our skeptics who don't believe we are doing everything we can to keep our game alive.
Being able to say, "Guys, Karen Traviss herself gave us this phrase just for our game! How's that for being serious!"
Thank you very much for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerly,
Ray Becker

It took her less than a week to reply with the following:

Hi Ray. Thank you for the kind words - I really appreciate it.

This would probably do the job: I've used and active tense, because that's just the way Mando'a is. . . .

Gar partayl Mando'ade jorcu be val beskar'gam; gar digu val jorcu be val besbe'trayce.
Good luck with the project. I do remember the miniatures game, and I know that a lot of people love playing it.

Best
KT

And that brings us to the stats for the Mandalorian Gunsmith. It is easy to compare this piece to the Elite Rebel Commando, which has Ion Gun and Override. However, you get to add in General Rieekan’s Commander Effect of Mobile Attack and General Crix Madine’s Cunning Attack +20. You do lose Steath and Twin Attack, but the latter can be easily acquired. This is a great addition to the Mandalorian faction.

The RCM for the Gunsmith is the 501st Legion Clone Trooper 6/40 from the Dark Times set. If we only use Mandalorian pieces, we may run out too soon, and this is a piece with a decent sized gun, and quite new and easy to acquire.

Oh, and as for the meaning of the flavor text, feel free to discuss it in the forums. You can't expect us to give you every piece of information, can you?

SWM Gamers at Gencon 2010!!!

It was a great Gencon this year. I want personally thank all those that chose to come to Gencon over C5. I think it was worth the trip. This year we had several new tournaments including the very popular Mystery Map. Turns out the Mystery Map tourney was the best attended tourney of the weekend. It eclipsed 60 players and everyone had a great time. Once again the best 4 days in gaming proved to be true. This year was the first year of the new Starship Battles rules. The Championship for SSB in its first year was shared by Ted budinski and myself. The Team tourney was seized this year by Team Canada. Congrats to those guys!!!!!

Finally a big conggratulations to Daniel Stephens winner of the 2010 Star Wars Miniatures Championship!!!!!

I cannot think a guy with a better attitude winning this year!!!! Great Job!!!

I hope to see you next year as Gencon will be bigger and better. We will be having 2 championships next year and bigger and better tourneys for all (whether you are a competitive player or casual makes no difference).
